<image:title>News - 2025 Spring Newsletter + Upcoming Town HAll - In addition to the above mentioned actions following the adjournment of the 2025 General Assembly Session we returned to the capitol for the Reconvened Session to consider the Governor’s actions. Those actions ranged from the amendments to bills, the budget, and bills that were vetoed. Following our actions during that session the Governor was given an additional 30-days to take any final action. On May 2, he did just that on the budget and the remaining bills before him. I am proud to report that from our last update we can now say that we have fully passed 13 bills and received only one veto. While I was saddened to see the Governor veto our legislation requiring data collection on new private well permits, we will continue to prioritize well issues plaguing our communities in the future. In my next update I will break down each bill we’ve officially passed, and other notable legislative actions that will go into effect July 1.</image:title>

<image:title>News - 2025 Spring Newsletter + Upcoming Town HAll - The work of the legislative session doesn’t happen without an incredible team and this session our office was staffed by dedicated hardworking young leaders. With all legislative action officially at an end, our fellows, interns and admin members of the team will wrap-up their positions/academic year at their respective colleges or transition to their next opportunity. If you contacted our office, emailed a position on legislation or visited the capitol, you likely had the benefit of interacting with them. Please join me in wishing Cameran, Wesley, Madison, Christopher, Jasmine, Brandy and Joseph all the best in their future!</image:title>

<image:title>News - 2025 Spring Newsletter + Upcoming Town HAll - Further, this session I had the opportunity to recommend a middle school student from district applicants to serve as a page. Hannah from Prince George was both an amazing representative of our community and was well respected among her peers. Her mock legislation SB14 regarding IEP (Individualized Education Program) violations passed successfully and she was elected floor leader! I thank Hannah for her service to the Virginia Senate for 45-days and wish her all the best with the remainder of her school year. The best part about the end of the General Assembly Session is getting back into the district and visiting my communities. The spring has already allowed me to tour places like St. Joseph’s Villa to learn more about the incredible work they do, provide legislative updates at community meetings and attend my local churches for worship service.</image:title>

<image:title>News - 2025 General Assembly Session: The Crossover Report</image:title>
<image:caption>We began the 2025 legislative session with 20 bills and two study resolutions. As of the crossover point, we are sending 13 bills and our two study resolutions to the House of Delegates for final action. Most notable are the following: (SB1267) allowing for civil penalties for property owners failing to adhere to zoning codes for multifamily residences; (SB1221) aiming to prevent the number of vulnerable individuals from being evicted from public housing authorities; (SB1230) ensuring our schools have the ability to keep more quality long-term substitutes in classrooms when needed to prevent new substitutes being replaced every 90 days.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - 2025 General Assembly Session: The Crossover Report</image:title>
<image:caption>Also now under consideration in the House of Delegates is (SB1383) relating to the sanctioning of nursing homes. From 2018 to 2024 complaints increased by 59%, in 2024 alone the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) received 939 nursing home complaints. Our legislation not only stands to improve the quality of care being offered, but it also empowers the VA Health Commissioner to prevent problems discovered from escalating to serious conditions. I had an opportunity to discuss this critical legislation with WTVR Channel 6 news as part of their ongoing coverage of nursing home concerns. Take a look at the story here.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - 2025 General Assembly Session: The Crossover Report</image:title>
<image:caption>In addition to the abovementioned proposals, also included in the Senate’s budget is $222.9 million to lift the cap for school support staff funding 27.89 positions per 1,000 students. For 16 years this has been a public school priority and we have been incrementally carrying legislation chipping away at this cap for years. This year our legislation (SB1236) while not acted on in committee was ultimately incorporated into the budget. We were proud to join the Fund Our Schools Coalition and legislative partners in celebrating this milestone moment! Additional coverage on this proposal was featured on WRIC Channel 8 and can be viewed here.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - 2025 General Assembly Session: The Crossover Report</image:title>
<image:caption>Without question, the actions taking place at the federal level have left many uncertain about how those decisions will affect them here in Virginia. Whether you're a federal government employee/contractor, dependent on federally funded healthcare access or assistance I know these decisions matter to you. That’s why I joined my colleagues in a joint press conference to publicly express concerns regarding the actions of President Trump and his administration and how we are working to identify ways to protect Virginians during this tumultuous time. We will also be preparing how to provide resources that may be impacted while billions of dollars are being froze. If you have already been affected by these changes, please don’t hesitate to let us know so we can be of support to you.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Established in 2020 to commemorate Virginia’s role in the 250th anniversary of American independence, the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission (VA250) aims to form a more perfect union by educating Virginians about their history and civic duty and sharing diverse narratives that capture Virginia’s complete story and role in shaping the nation. Commemoration related events are already happening throughout Virginia and we were excited to attend the launch of Surry’s Heritage Trail as part of these commemorative events. The Surry County VA250 Local Committee officially launched the Surry County Cultural Trail: Celebrating the Stories of African and Indigenous Communities, which had been in the works for over a year. The project presents the sites, history, experiences, and contributions of the African descendants and Indigenous People who have lived in Surry County from the 1600’s to today, in the form of a self-guided driving trail. <image:caption>March 9 marked the official end of the 60-day 2024 General Assembly Session. As I reflect on this date—marking “sine die” (pronounced sigh-knee dye), and March generally when I formally launched my campaign for Senate a year ago—I was struck with sincere gratitude for the opportunity to once again fight for policies that will uplift the communities I represent. The amazing team I had working alongside me allowed us to hit the ground running with impactful issues, representative of the need we see in our district and broadly supported when successful. In addition, they took your calls, responded to your letters and emails, and helped arrange your visits to the capitol this session.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - 2024 Session Wrap Up & Looking Ahead to Reconvened - I want to amplify SB488 which is also awaiting the Governor’s signature and directs the Department of Medical Assistance to apply for waivers and consider removing burdensome regulation that prevents parents from receiving compensation as caretakers for their developmental disability waiver recipient children. I can’t express the number of parents who contacted me with personal experiences about how the current structure of this process has been especially difficult for them.</image:title>

<image:title>News - 2024 Session Wrap Up & Looking Ahead to Reconvened - With the delay in the regulations that were scheduled to go into effect earlier this month, this legislation will now allow new flexibility that will make the lives of so many parents more manageable. This outcome is largely due to the consistent advocacy of many families. Take a look as I discuss this further with WTKR’s Erin Miller in her news coverage.</image:title>

<image:title>News - 2024 Session Wrap Up & Looking Ahead to Reconvened - On April 14, at 2:00 PM at the Petersburg Public Library, I will convene each of the potential companies seeking to develop the resort destination casino in Petersburg. This town hall will give Petersburg residents the opportunity to engage with potential operators and see their presentations featuring their vision for the development. Legislation is awaiting the Governor’s signature to allow for a referendum in November. Citizens will then have the final vote on whether a casino becomes a reality.</image:title>

<image:title>News - 2024 Session Wrap Up & Looking Ahead to Reconvened - As we wrap up Women’s History Month, I could not be prouder of the women leaders I work alongside. The General Assembly saw a record number of women in both bodies and in roles to truly have an impact. Virginians not only elected us but sent us with a mandate to advance women’s rights, prioritize women’s maternal health, protect reproductive access and ensure economic opportunity. As we take a moment to reflect on the generations of women before us who fought to secure our freedoms, I am proud to say this generation of women are continuing that work. Some of that work has looked like:</image:title>
